The President of the European Council argued this Monday that his presence, that of the President of the European Commission and several European leaders in Kiev demonstrates "solidarity with the Ukrainian population" and with Volodymyr Zelensky, warning that "the moment matters".

"Our presence in Kiev today is a demonstration of our solidarity with the people of Ukraine and with President Volodymyr Zelensky. We all want this war to end, for the suffering and destruction to stop," wrote António Costa on social media. The President of the European Council added that "the moment matters", for "Ukraine and for the security of Europe", at a time when the security architecture that has been in force practically since the Second World War is threatened by the uncertainty of the decisions of the United States of America.

Washington and Moscow have begun preliminary meetings to try to find a ceasefire solution and a possible peace agreement, but have excluded the European Union and Ukraine, the country that was invaded exactly three years ago, from these discussions. At the same time, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, criticized his Ukrainian counterpart, classifying him as "a dictator" without democratic legitimacy, and blaming Ukraine for the outbreak of war on February 24, 2022. The closeness between the Republican and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is well known.

The White House also considered that the European Union had an influence on the spread of the conflict, which led António Costa to call an extraordinary meeting of the European Council for March 6, with only two topics: the war in Ukraine and the security of the European continent.
